Dr. Stefka Slavova

Lead Economist, The World Bank

Dr. Stefka Slavova is Lead Economist in the World Bank Group’s Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice and she is based in the World Bank’s Central Asia Regional Office in Almaty, Kazakhstan. 

Recently, she also consulted the Economics, Policy and Governance Department of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London on lessons learned from privatization experiences, and is a former EBRD Board Director for Bulgaria, Poland and Albania (2010-2014). She also advised the Open Society Foundation, New York, on Ukraine’s economic reform programme after the Euro-Maidan (2014-2015). Prior to joining the EBRD in early 2010, she spent 10 years at the World Bank in Washington DC, where she worked most recently as a Senior Economist in the Investment Climate Department, advising different countries on the design of commercial laws and regulatory frameworks related to private business. 

At the World Bank, Dr. Slavova spent four years working on private sector development projects in the Latin America and Caribbean region. She also contributed to various research studies and reports, focusing on investment climate issues and has a number of publications in academic and policy journals. She is a regular commentator in Bulgarian media on current economic and financial affairs. Ms. Slavova holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
