Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau (ITU-D)

Mr Brahima Sanou has more than 35 years of experience in the telecommunication/ICT sector. He was elected Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) in 2010 and unanimously re-elected in 2014. 

A telecommunication engineer, he also holds a postgraduate diploma from the Centre for Financial, Economic and Banking Studies of Paris. His experience, which spans 35 years in the telecommunication/ICT sector, has equipped him with the proficiency and broad-mindedness needed to grasp the opportunities of using ICTs for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in terms of their technical, economic and financial aspects.

Before being elected as Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau, Mr Sanou served for more than 10 years as the ITU Regional Director for Africa and Liaison Officer to the African Union Commission and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and prior to that as Representative of Burkina Faso to the ITU Council for 10 years. This unique profile and his experience of serving as a Member of the ITU Council, as Regional Director in the field close to the needs and realities of countries, and as an Elected Official of the ITU, grants Mr Sanou the capacity to apprehend telecom/ICT and ITU issues from different but complementary angles.

In November 2017, Mr Brahima Sanou received the prestigious “African Leader of the Year Award" in recognition of his outstanding contribution to development. The African Leadership Awards reward and celebrate African decision-makers who have distinguished themselves on the continent and internationally and who represent a source of pride for Africa.

He brings with him a vision, a commitment and full energy and enthusiasm to make a difference in delivering ICT solutions for sustainable development.
